Light Brown Apple Moth Advisory for Northen California

"California has one of the most diverse environments in the world, spectacular trees,
lush plants, in the wild and right here in our beautiful communities. All this is
threatened by a pest called the light brown apple moth. The voracious moth larvae
threatens our environment and the food supply. Before 2007, the moth had never been
found in North America. We want to eradicate it before it causes real problems here.
We're fortunate to have an eradication tool that doesn't involve insecticides. We'll
soon be releasing sterile light brown apple moths to breed the pest out of
existence. This is the type of biological approach that has succeeded with a number
of other pests. For that reason, the experts believe it can work for us. These are
challenging times to try to protect California from the threat of invasive species.
Working together, we can eradicate the light brown apple moth and protect our
cherished way of life."
